About | The Quiet Lens
「 o 」 Artist’s eye. Engineer’s mind.
Forrest is a portrait photographer based in Sydney, Australia.
His work explores stillness, presence, and the quiet character of ordinary people. Through simple lighting and unhurried observation, he creates portraits that seek the essence beneath expression.
Forrest’s visual language began long before photography. Trained in Chinese ink drawing from childhood, he developed an early sensitivity to line, balance, and empty space. These foundations continue to shape how he approaches the camera today—seeing light not simply as illumination, but as form.
Although largely self-taught in photography, his practice is guided by decades of artistic observation and a personal interest in mindfulness and contemplative living. In his small home studio in North West Sydney, portrait sittings unfold slowly, often beginning with tea and conversation before the camera is introduced.
The aim is simple: to allow a moment of quiet attention in which the subject can simply be present.
Alongside portraiture, Forrest also creates still-life studies of food and objects, often collaborating with makers and culinary artists whose work reflects a similar appreciation for craft and simplicity.
His long-term personal project, 365, was created during the isolation of the pandemic—a year-long visual diary documenting everyday life with his children. The project remains an important exploration of finding meaning in ordinary moments.
